Uganda Tour: The Ultimate Itinerary + Our Tips

Uganda, also known as the Pearl of Africa, is a must-see destination for every nature lover and adventurer. During this 15-day tour through Uganda, you’ll discover the best the country has to offer: from gorilla tracking in Bwindi and safaris with the Big Five to the impressive natural spectacle of the Nile River.

This itinerary is perfect for those looking for an unforgettable Ugandan holiday, packed with wildlife, culture, and adventure. Want to experience this road trip without any worries? Uganda Nomads offers complete tours that follow this itinerary precisely, with hassle-free planning.

Tips from the team

  • Plan flexibly: Uganda operates on “African time” – everything takes longer than expected, but that’s precisely what makes it authentic. Give yourself space for spontaneous discoveries during your Uganda tour.
  • Respect wildlife: Keep your distance from animals, don’t use a flash near gorillas, and always follow your guide. These animals are in their home; you are the guest.
  • Pack patience: Permits, border crossings, and roadside checks can take time. Consider it part of the adventure. Locals appreciate your patience and often reward it with extra service.
  • Learn basic Luganda words: “Webale” (thank you) and “Gyendi” (goodbye) open hearts. Ugandans beam when visitors try to speak their language.
  • Flexible mindset: That perfect sunset photo might be obscured by clouds, but you might spot a rare bird. Uganda always gives back, sometimes in unexpected ways.
  • Respect local culture: Ask permission to take photos of people. A smile opens more doors than any camera.

15-day itinerary for your Uganda tour

A well-planned route makes the difference between a fun holiday and an unforgettable adventure. This 15-day round trip in Uganda takes you past all the highlights, with plenty of time to experience everything without feeling rushed.

Day 1: Arriving in Entebbe – Welcome to Africa!

The easiest way to begin this Ugandan journey is to fly into Entebbe International Airport. This is a great starting point for your tour. You’ll immediately feel the warm, humid air as you step off the plane. This is Africa! With its wide avenues, botanical gardens, and colonial charm, Entebbe is the ideal place to recover from your flight and gradually settle into the Ugandan rhythm. Because you’ll arrive in the evening, a relaxing night in a cozy hotel awaits you.

Visit the local market for colorful fruit, sample freshly caught fish on the waterfront, or search for the rare shoebill on Lake Victoria. Did you know that Entebbe was once the capital of Uganda?

Day 2: Entebbe to Tukulu & Jinja – the undiscovered Uganda

You’ll be taken to Kampala, where you’ll pick up your 4×4. From there, you’ll drive to Tukulu Eco Village, a less touristy village where you’ll experience authentic Uganda. Local families will welcome you with open arms and introduce you to their daily lives. You’ll explore the village, learn about traditional dishes as they prepare a local lunch, and see how coffee is grown and processed. You can even participate in a local dance! This is the Uganda that few travelers see: real life as it has existed for generations, far from the tourist trail.

Then you’ll continue to Jinja. Along the way, you’ll pass lush landscapes, vibrant villages, and colorful markets—a perfect introduction to the real Uganda.

Day 3: Jinja – adrenaline on the Nile

Jinja is known as the adventure capital of East Africa. At the source of the Nile, you can enjoy adrenaline-pumping activities like whitewater rafting, bungee jumping, and kayaking. The official source of the Nile is also a historical and spiritual highlight.

But travelers who prefer a more leisurely pace can also enjoy Jinja to the fullest. Take a relaxing trip on the gentle Nile by kayak or paddleboard, join a yoga session, or indulge in a massage at your lodge. Or visit the official source of the Nile on an optional boat trip.

In the town center, you can enjoy a delicious coffee or lunch. And for a truly local experience, hop on the back of a boda boda – Uganda’s iconic motorbike taxi

Day 4 & 5: Jinja – Murchison Falls National Park

On these days, you’ll continue your journey to the impressive Murchison Falls National Park. Along the way, you can stop at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, where you can spot white rhinos with a ranger—a truly unique experience.

At the end of the day, you’ll arrive at Murchison Falls, the most spectacular natural phenomenon of your tour. Here, the Nile River is forced through a narrow gorge just seven meters wide, causing the water to plunge down with enormous force. You’ll climb to the top of the falls for stunning views and take a boat trip on the river, where you’ll see hippos, crocodiles, and elephants. This force of nature lets you experience the power of Africa at its finest.

The next morning is all about wildlife—both on land and in the water. With a bit of luck, you might even spot the entire Big Five. Start early with a self-drive safari at sunrise. This is when you might see giraffes, elephants, buffalo, kobs, and perhaps even lions or a leopard.

Day 6: From Murchison Falls to Kibale

This day’s drive is longer, but the stunning finish line makes up for it. You’ll continue your Uganda road trip south, passing savannas, tea plantations, small villages, and stunning vistas along the way – the drive itself is an experience in itself.

By late afternoon, you’ll arrive in Kibale Forest National Park, one of the best places in Africa for chimpanzee trekking. The biodiversity, tropical atmosphere, and numerous crater lakes make this area a highlight of any Uganda safari.

Day 7: Kibale Forest – Chimpanzee Tracking

Kibale Forest, located in the heart of Uganda, is known for its many species of monkeys. One of the highlights here is a walk through the forest in search of chimpanzees. The sounds of breaking branches and “ooh-ooh” calls bring you close to our closest relatives. The chimpanzees are playful, curious, and sometimes almost human in their behavior. It’s a special experience to observe these animals in their natural habitat, accompanied by expert guides. You also need a special permit for this experience. If you travel with Uganda Nomads, they will arrange this permit for you.

Day 8 & 9: Kibale to Queen Elizabeth National Park – Safari with the ‘Big Five’

On this day you’ll start with a short drive from Kibale to Queen Elizabeth National Park. This park offers everything you could want in an African safari. With a bit of luck, you might even spot some of the Big Five here. Lions lounge under acacias, elephants stroll peacefully, and buffalo graze in the grass. A boat safari on the Kazinga Channel will take you past thousands of animals, from hippos to crocodiles and over 600 bird species. The park is also known for its rare tree-climbing lions, an impressive sight you might spot with a bit of luck.

Day 10 & 11: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest – Gorilla Tracking

From Queen Elizabeth, you’ll travel to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Bwindi, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is home to almost half of the world’s mountain gorillas. Only about 1,000 of these mighty primates remain in the wild.

The next day is entirely dedicated to Gorilla tracking. It’s an intensive but unforgettable experience. You’ll hike through dense rainforest and sometimes steep trails, searching for these impressive animals. Once you come face to face with a silverback, you’ll understand why this is the highlight of your Uganda tour. Uganda Nomads will arrange the special permits so you can enjoy this unique experience.

Day 12 & 13: Lake Bunyonyi – relaxation among the hills

After your wildlife experience on the gorilla safari, it’s time to relax at Lake Bunyonyi. Nestled among lush green hills, this lake is known as the “place of many small birds.” With its 29 islands and serene atmosphere, it’s the ideal spot to enjoy a boat trip, stroll through the terraced landscapes, or simply unwind. Lake Bunyonyi feels almost like a little piece of Switzerland in Africa and is the perfect preparation for the adventures ahead on your Uganda vacation.

Day 14: More Bunyonyi – More Mburo

Lake Mburo National Park has an intimate atmosphere that immediately puts you in the safari mood. Zebras graze peacefully across the open savannas, a rare sight in Uganda, as this is the only park where you can spot them!

You can even enjoy a guided walking safari here – a unique experience where giraffes and impalas stroll by at eye level. A boat safari on Lake Mburo will show you hippos, crocodiles, and hundreds of bird species.

Day 15: Vibrant Kampala – a visit to the capital

Begin your day with a final safari by car, on foot, or by bike, then drive back to Kampala, the country’s vibrant capital. Kampala is known as the “city of seven hills.” It was once built on seven hills, including the historic Kasubi Hill, home to the impressive Kasubi Royal Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the resting place of the kings of the Buganda Kingdom. Kampala is a vibrant city where tradition and modernity converge, with colorful markets, a vibrant culture, and a warm atmosphere.
